Christian IX of Denmark, born 1818 Gottorf Castle, Scheleswig, Duchy of Scheswig, died 1906 Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, Denmark. Buried, Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark. Great-great-grandson of George II of Great Britain (Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg). Christian's grandsons, included George V of the United Kingdom, through his daughter, Princess Alexandra of Denmark's marriage to Edward VII of the United Kingdom. During the early part of his reign, Denmark was defeated in the Second Schelswig War, 1864, by Prussia and lost the provinces of Schelswig, Holstein and Lauenberg. North Schleswig was re-united with Denmark in 1918.
